From 1983–1987, TV viewers danced their cares away at Fraggle Rock. Created by Jim Henson and featuring a cast of Muppet creatures called Fraggles, Fraggle Rock entertained while encouraging an understanding and embracing of diversity through the adventures of the Fraggle gang—Red, Gobo, Wembley, Boober, Mokey, and Uncle Traveling Matt—and their interactions with Doc, Doc’s dog Sprocket, and the Gorgs, gigantic creatures in Doc’s garden. Aside from winning three Cable ACE Awards and five International Emmys, the show also resonated with viewers so much so that in 2005, an online petition was signed by more than 30,000 fans to get Fraggle Rock on DVD. The first three seasons were then released in special collector’s editions.
In September 2009, The Jim Henson Company launched a new merchandise collection called Fraggle Rock Forever. Apparel, tote bags, belt buckles, jewelry, and classic plush are in specialty and department stores. There is also a Fraggle Rock feature film in the works, but details are not yet available. A slew of licensees, including Rasta Imposta, Manhattan Toy, and Bioworld Merchandising, have signed on to bring even more Fraggle product to store shelves.
The first of three issues in Archaia’s Fraggle Rock comic book miniseries debuted in April, and last month the Fraggle Rock Vol. 1 Collected Edition Hardcover, which includes the first three issues in one comic, debuted.
Bioworld Merchandising signed on to produce Fraggle Rock-branded apparel, including hats.
Apparel licensee JEM Sportswear will produce T-shirts featuring character and logo artwork.
Manhattan Toy signed on to produce plush and puppets based on Fraggle Rock characters.
For this Halloween, Rasta Imposta created a line of Fraggle Rock costumes for adults, including characters Gobo, Red, Mokey, and Wembley.
