Back to School Shopping Stats

Experian Marketing Services (EMS) released the following results from its back-to-school research. EMS Data comes from evaluating search data from the 64 most-used search engines.

Top Online Retail Sites for Back-to-School Shoppers

1. Walmart
2. JCPenney
3. Macy’s
4. Office Max
5. Sears
6. Staples
7. Office Depot

• The above data shows which retail websites have been receiving the most traffic from Back to School-related search terms. Brick-and-mortar stores are getting the majority of search traffic to date.

• Offers in subject lines were present on 37 percent of Back to School emails and generated 57 percent of total email revenue in 2012.

• EMS forecasts show a decline in spending this year as retailers deal with record heat waves across the country and the continued practice of showrooming. (However, last week’s stats from ICSC-Goldman Sachs predicted an increase in spending this year. Read those stats here.

• Interest in teen apparel is expected to happen after the school year begins. The reason is kids want to check out what other kids are wearing. EMS research shows that consumers still engage with apparel email offers in September.
