The Build-Up Continues: Minecraft Movie Sets Date for 2020

The Minecraft movie has officially set a premiere date.

On March 4, 2022, the film will become a reality. Fans have anxiously awaited the announcement since production was first announced in 2014. Dates have previously been tossed out since Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the film in 2014—around the same time Minecraft creator Mojang was acquired by Microsoft. It’s original release date had been set for May 24, 2019 before getting the push back.

Minecraft creators joked in announcing the news that “it turns out that making a live-action, full-length feature film is really complicated.”

The Minecraft movie follows the story of a teenage girl and an unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.

Warner Bros. is producing the film, and Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist) is on board as director.

Minecraft was created by Markus “Notch” Persson, who also founded Mojang.
