Royaltie$ Marketplace: HGTV

In 1991, Ken Lowe, then a Scripps broadcast executive (now CEO and president of E.W. Scripps Company), had an idea for a new network centered on home and garden programming. So he drew a house. But this was no ordinary house. Featuring rooms representing different concepts for home- or garden-related programs, it marked the foundation for Lowe’s successful pitch to Scripps in 1992. The now-leading network in home and lifestyle programming Home and Garden Television (HGTV) debuted in 1994.

Today, HGTV reaches more than 99 million U.S. households, with licensed programming airing globally in 69 countries and territories. Select programs are even available to service personnel through American Forces Radio and Television Service.

In 2009, Scripps signed The Beanstalk Group to develop a line of HGTV Home licensed products and build new partnerships, which has allowed HGTV to promote product through its programming. Serta, which offers HGTV Green Home licensed mattresses, was made HGTV’s exclusive mattress supplier for the annual HGTV Green Home sweepstakes. A multi-year marketing partnership with Disney Destinations this year will further leverage the brand through in-park events and features, such as the 75-day Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. Plans are also underway with Hearst Magazines to test-launch HGTV Magazine, which will cover popular themes from HGTV programming as well as new content.
