Precious Moments has begun to expand its brand into a variety of categories looking beyond its roots as a figurine and gift company. It has recently signed a number of deals that bring Precious Moments’ art and characters to the baby care category. Susan Meek, vice-president of licensing for Precious Moments, discusses why the characters can be licensed successfully and looks at the company’s future plans.
Abby Cadabby has been part of the Sesame Street character lineup since 2006. Fans of Where’s Waldo can now seek and find the red-and-white stripe-wearing character on their phones through licensed mobile games and iPhone apps thanks to Classic Media, which represents the property. As of April, 1 million Where’s Waldo apps had been sold for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Nicole Blake, who was recently promoted to executive vice-president, global marketing & consumer products at Classic Media, talked about bringing Waldo to cell phones and why this venture makes sense for licensing.

Sara Nemerov handles the consumer products program for Frank Sinatra Enterprises (FSE), and similarly for Rhino-affiliated artists. (Warner Music Group owns Rhino.) As head of consumer products and brand licensing, Nemerov will be identifying and securing new opportunities featuring Frank Sinatra’s name and likeness, as well as expanding existing FSE efforts. Nemerov will also handle licensing with respect to other artists within Rhino. The focus here is on Frank Sinatra.
Mars Retail Group is the licensing wing of the Mars, Inc. The company’s stable of properties includes candy brands like M&M’s, Snickers, Skittles, Starburst, 3 Musketeers, Milky Way, and Twix, as well as the Pedigree and Whiskas pet brands.
Ludorum was formed and is run by former HIT Entertainment and Learning Curve International executives. Last year, the company brought on board Maureen Taxter, who has held licensing positions at The Jim Henson Company, Hasbro, and Nickelodeon. The Chuggington property is a big focus for the company. Chuggington is a train-based global children’s property targeted to children ages 2–5 years old that takes place in a vibrant and colorful world.
